The National Institute of Sports Science (NISS) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially opened applications for its Diploma in Sports - 2025/2026 program. This one-year course, conducted in the Sinhala and English medium, is aimed at individuals interested in advancing their careers in sports and physical education.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates aged 18 to 35 years (with an upper limit of 45 years for government employees) are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination with at least six subjects, including Sinhala or Tamil and Mathematics/Arithmetic. Additionally, one of the following qualifications is required:
■ A six-month course in Sports or Physical Education from a recognized institution.
■ A completed sports training course under the Police, Armed Forces, or Civil Defense.
■ Five years of experience as a sports teacher, ground instructor, or demonstrated excellence in sports.
■ Membership in a National Sports Team and participation in an international competition.
■ Placement in district or national-level sports events.
Application Process
Interested candidates must submit a handwritten application using the provided specimen format on an 8"x13.5" paper by March 28, 2025. The applications should be sent via registered post to:
Director, National Institute of Sports Science, 100/7, Independence Avenue, Colombo 07.
Applicants must write "Application for the course of Diploma in Sports 2025/2026" on the top left corner of the envelope. Government employees must route their applications through their respective department heads.
Selection Process
Eligible candidates will undergo:
1. A written examination
2. An interview
3. A physical fitness assessment
Only those who pass all stages will be selected.
Course Details
The 12-month diploma will cover:
■ General Theory of Training
■ Practical training in at least 10 major sports
■ Specialization in Track and Field Athletics
■ Courses on Sports Physiology, Sports Sociology, Sports Administration, Nutrition, and Psychology.
The course fee is Rs. 60,000, payable to the Bank of Ceylon, Torrington Branch (Account: "Secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs"). Proof of payment must be emailed to Diploma@niss.gov.lk before the course begins.
